Sierra de Guara

The Sierra de Guara was declared a Natural Park in 1991

The Sierra de Guara Natural Park is located in the Pre-Pyrenees of Huesca, Aragon. It is a mountain range of limestone and conglomerate rock with unique rivers and canyons.

With over 45,000 hectares, it is the largest protected natural area in the region. Its elevation ranges from 430 meters at the Alcanadre River to 2,077 meters at the highest peak.

The climate, a mix of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, is ideal for outdoor activities such as canyoning, climbing, trekking, via ferratas, mountain biking (MTB) and birdwatching.

The typical vegetation is a mix of oak, beech, black pine, holm oak, boxwood, juniper and yew, depending on the orientation and altitude.

Wildlife includes birds such as griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, bearded vultures, golden eagles, etc. Among mammals: wild boar, foxes, roe deer, and more. In the rivers, you’ll find trout, carp and Pyrenean trouts, among others.

Human presence in the Sierra de Guara has left its mark in the form of prehistoric cave paintings and dolmens scattered across the region. Today, the population is mainly engaged in agriculture, livestock and tourism.
