Alquézar
It is located on the banks of the Vero River and at the foot of the Sierra de Guara and its Canyons Natural Park.
Alquézar brings together history and legend. The castle that gives the village its name dates back to the 9th century, when it was built by the Moors to resist the Christian kingdoms.
Today, its historic center is classified as a Historic-Artistic Site, and the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, within the castle walls, is a National Monument. Its medieval past lives on in its streets, its houses, the 16th-century gate to the main square, and its museum. There are also examples of rock art in the caves of the Vero River Cultural Park.

Declared a Historic-Artistic Site, this village offers the chance to relive the medieval past as you walk through its most emblematic streets and corners. For example, the Gothic gate that gives access to the old village or the Main Square, a porticoed square where each house has a unique architectural solution.
Continuing the route through the streets, at the top stands the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, built where the former Moorish fortress once stood and which is still partially preserved, including wall sections, towers, and gates… This monumental Collegiate Church has witnessed the passing of centuries and the various architectural styles they left behind. Of the early Romanesque period, only the atrium decorated with historiated capitals remains.
Later, in the 14th century, the Gothic cloister was built, using the former Romanesque arches. The current church—Collegiate—was built in the Gothic-Renaissance style in the 16th century.
